名字

這部片子幾年前就看過了，如今回憶起來這部片子就像前面那位評論的那樣，場面宏大但是情節抓不住要點，可能還是讀書比較好。不過這部片子中的一個場景令我非常印象深刻，是Charles回憶自己在白人學校的時候怎樣起了這樣一個名字：

Elaine問Charles:
And, where did "Charles" come from?
那麼，你為什麼會叫Charles Eastman?

Well...Eastman is my mother's name.
Charles：嗯……Eastman是我母親的名字

Her father was a white--
她的父親是白人

don't tell The Friends of the Indian.
可別告訴「印第安人之友」啊 ：）

And "Charles"?
Elaine: 那麼「Charles」呢？

l was in school one day
Charles： 一天我在學校里

and the teacher was mistaken
about something--
老師把一件事說錯了

The name of the chief of my Sioux tribe.
我的蘇族部落酋長的名字

- She called him "Spotted Bear."- Chief Spotted Bear...
她叫他「花熊」——花熊酋長

So, l raised my hand because...
於是我舉起了手

l felt it was a dishonor to the chief to misspeak his name.
我感到說錯他的名字是對酋長的不尊重

But she wouldn't call on me,
但是她不叫我的名字

because l hadn't taken a white name.
因為我還沒有起白人名字

l just couldn't do it.
我就是不想起

And l remember her words as if it were moments ago...
我直到今天還清清楚楚記得她說的每一句話

Chief Spotted Bear could have saved his people.
「花熊酋長本來可以救他的部落入民的命」

But he chose war instead.
「但是他選擇了戰爭」

"Missus," l cried...
「老師」，我喊道

l believe you are mistaken.
「我確信你錯了」

And she turned to me...
她轉過來對著我說……

How shall l address you?
「我應該怎麼稱呼你？」

Quickly,
the children are waiting.
「快點，其他孩子在等著呢」

"Charles," l replied.
「Charles,」我回答道，

Charles.
「Charles」

Charles. Yes, Charles,
「Charles，好的，Charles.」

what is it you would like to say?
"你要說什麼?"

"Excuse me, missus, l am certain..."
"對不起,老師。我肯定……"

l am certain the name of this chief was Little Crow.
「我肯定這個酋長的名字是小烏鴉。」

"Little Crow."
「小烏鴉」

l believe you are right,Charles.
「我相信你是對的，Charles。」

His name was Little Crow. Thank you...
「他的名字是小烏鴉。謝謝……」

"Thank you...
「謝謝……

Charles."
Charles。「

And he did not want war.
「他也不想要戰爭」

"He did not...
「他不想……

want war."
要戰爭。「

And this is how l came to be called...
這就是我怎樣起了這個名字……
