Some thoughts after watching the movie 'The Andromeda Strain'

Yesterday evening, or exactly midnight, my roommate and I watched the movie "The Andromeda Strain", in Chinese "天外來菌(科幻 災難)".

It is a horrible movie, while it is really insightful and warning one. It can be one of the pills for modern men to cure their wrong conceptions and behaviors in life, from quite a variety of perspectives.

So I recommend this movie to everyone urgently. It is an absolutely excellent horrible movie!

There are several thoughts emerging in my mind when watching the movie.

Firstly, the scientists are too much intelligent and knowledgeable. They are just incredible. But their performance in conquering research problem is reasonable for some people. Some people can do achieve this kind of accomplishments. I just wonder about when I can reach the level as them? Or never? If I can, I would be willing to die at a comparatively young age, just like those in the movie.

Secondly, the disasters we human beings create may be so horrible and overwhelming that they may wield the power to destroy this beautiful planet easily, together with all living things on it. It is really astonishing just to think about that. In this movie, a kind of microorganism is endowed with disastrous power! It is possible, though the possibility is not high.

Thirdly, human beings are too greedy in exploring natural resources, especially after the entrance of industrial age. If we don't change our attitude toward how to use natural resources and adopt a more sustainable way to develop and exist, the day of resources depletioin may come some day not too far away. So, we human beings really should rethink about ourselves and our beliefs in life.

Fourthly, morality and loyalty really account much. I hate one of the female scientists in the movie, very much. Though she committed a big mistake, or murder, if you like to call her behavior, due to her love and tendency to her family members. Only in this kind of situation can we understand deeply why so many people give up to save their lives or their family's lives in face of threatening from enemies. That is a must. Otherwise, they commit a huge guilty that can not be forgiven. Morality and loyalty come first, compared to all other things, though morality and loyalty are controversial terms themselves.

Fifthly, such insightful movies come from USA most of the time, due to democratic social environment and creative directors and writers, and people's caring about human beings' future. I hope this kind of movie can be created in China, though the possibility is so low.


To work for something was all that left in my mind.
